Etymology:

1. ಹೌದು and ಅಲ್ಲ are derived from the verb ಅಹು, which roughly means "it has that quality/nature".
2. ಇಲ್ಲ is derived from the verb ಇರು, which rougly means "it is / it exists".

ಇಲ್ಲ vs ಅಲ್ಲ

ಇಲ್ಲ is used to denote the absence of an entity, and ಅಲ್ಲ is used to denote the absence of a quality in the entity. E.g.,

1. Dad is not at home. - पापा घर पर नहीं हैं। - ಅಪ್ಪ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿಲ್ಲ.
2. He is not my dad. - वे मेरे पापा नहीं हैं। - ಅವರು ನನ್ನ ತಂದೆ ಅಲ್ಲ.
3. I don't have a pen. - मेरे पास pen नहीं है। - ನನ್ನ ಹತ್ತಿರ pen ಇಲ್ಲ.
4. My pen is not blue. - मेरा pen नीला नहीं है। - ನನ್ನ pen ನೀಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲ.

Negative participles

There are two words to represent without: ಅಲ್ಲದ and ಅಲ್ಲದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲದ is the negative relative participle (used for adjectivfication), and ಅಲ್ಲದೆ is the negative verbal participle (used to denote sequential/concurrent action). E.g.,
