Post Positions

A post-position is a group of letters or words appended to a verb (or sometimes a noun) to give additional meaning.

ವುದು

Converts a verb to a noun. This noun can have two meanings, depending on context:

1. Type 1: The act of doing the verb.
2. Type 2: The person/entity doing the verb. Like appending 'वाला' in Hindi.

Once the verb becomes a noun, ವಿಭಕ್ತಿs can be added to it.

To use this post-position, append ಯು to the verb if it's not ಉ-ending, and then append ವುದು.

Type 1 examples:

1. I like running. - मुझे भागना पसंद है। - ನನಗೆ ಓಡುವುದು ಇಷ್ಟ.
2. Studying well is every student's duty. - अच्छे से पढ़ना हर विद्यार्थी का कर्तव्य है। - ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಓದುವುದು ಒಬ್ಬೊಬ್ಬ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ.
3. I need a holiday from coding. - Coding करने से छुट्टी चाहिए। - Coding ಮಾಡುವುದಿಂದ ರಜೆ ಬೇಕು.

Type 2 example:

The one who is going there, is he your brother? - वहाँ जाने वाला तुम्हारा भाई है क्या? - ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋಗುವುದು ನಿನ್ನ ತಮ್ಮನಾ?

ಇದ್ದು

Converts a verb to a noun. This noun can have two meanings, depending on context:

1. Type 1: The act that was performed.
2. Type 2: The person/entity who did the verb.

To use this post-position, append ಇದ್ದು to the verb's past verbal participle.

Examples:

1. What you did yesterday was wrong. - तुमने कल जो किया वो बहुत गलत था। ನೀನು ನಿನ್ನೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು ತುಂಬಾ ತಪ್ಪು.

ಆಗ - while

Used to denote the time when an action is taking place. It's like adding 'when' or 'while' in English.

ಆಗ can be added to any of the 9 tenses. Conjugation rule:

Examples:

1. When you go to the market, please get me some vegetables. - जब Market की ओर जाओ तो मेरे लिए कुछ सब्ज़ियाँ ख़रीद लाना। - Market-ಕಡೆ ಹೋಗುವಾಗ ನನಗೆ ಕೆಲವು ತರಕಾರಿಗಳು ಕೊಂಡು ಕೊಡಿ.
2. When I was working, I heard a noise. - जब मैं काम कर रहा था, मैंने एक आवाज़ सुनी। - ನಾನು ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಇದ್ದಾಗ, ಒಂದು ಸದ್ದು ಕೇಳಿದೆನು.
3. ನಾನು ಹೋಗಿದ್ದಾಗ - मैं जब जा चुका था। - when I had gone
4. ನಾನು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದಾಗ - मैं जब वहाँ था। - when I was there

ಮೇಲೆ - के बाद

Roughly translates to 'के बाद' in Hindi. Added to Past RP of verb.

Examples:

1. ಆದ ಮೇಲೆ - होने के बाद - after happening.
2. ಅಂದ ಮೇಲೆ - कहने के बाद - after saying / after establishing.
3. After so much has happened, it's not right for me to stay here. - इतना होने के बाद मेरा यहाँ रहना ठीक नहीं है। - ಇಷ್ಟು ಆಡ ಮೇಲೆ, ನಾನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವುದು ಸರಿಯಲ್ಲ.
4. If you say it's a big house, then they must have a lot of money too. - तुम कह रहे हो कि बड़ा घर है तो पैसा भी अच्छा ही होगा। - ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮನೆ ಅಂದ ಮೇಲೆ, ದುಡ್ಡೂ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿಯೇ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕೊಳ್ಳು / ಕೊಂದ - reflexive actions

Used to indicate that an action is done on oneself.

Past verbal participle + appropriate conjugation of ಕೊಳ್ಳು.

1. Put on your shirt. - Shirt ಹಾಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳು.
2. Keep it in your house or a few days. - कुछ दिन अपने घर में रखिए। - ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ದಿನ ನೀಮಾ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ.

ಕೊಡು

Asking others to do something for you.

Past verbal participle of verb + Conjugation of ಕೊಡು.

Sometimes it changes the meaning of the preceeding verb, e.g., ಹೇಳು + ಕೊಡು = teach.

ಬಿಡು

Indicates that an action was done quickly, unexpectedly, or involuntary.

Past VP + conjugation of ಬಿಡು.

1. I slept. - मैं सो गया। - ನಾನು ಮಲಗಿಬಿಟ್ಟೆನು.

ಆಗು - active to passive voice

To write something in passive voice, use the first person imperative form of the verb, and append a conjugation of ಆಗು.

1. The work was done by me. - काम मुझसे हुआ। - ಕೆಲಸ ನನ್ನಿಂದ ಮಾಡಲಾಯಿತು.

ಆಗು - noun to verb converter

Any noun representing an emotion or feeling can be converted to a verb by adding (a conjugation of ಆಗು).

1. I got hungry. - मुझे भूक लगी। - ನನಗೆ ಹಸಿವು ಆಯಿತು.

ಪಡು - experience, endure

Past RP of ಪಡು is ಪಟ್ಟ.

1. I endured hardship. - मैंने परेशानी सही। - ನಾನು ಕಷ್ಟ ಪಟ್ಟೆನು.

ಇಂದ / ರಿಂದ - because of / की वजह से

Past RP + ಇಂದ : because of

Present RP + ಇಂದ : by doing something

ಸಂಧಿ the verb's ವುದು form with ಅರಿಂದ: because of / की वजह से

1. I didn't get anything by watching this movie. - ये movie देखकर कोई भी फ़ायदा नहीं हुआ। - ಈ movie ನೋಡಿದರಿಂದ ಏನೂ ಲಾಭವು ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ.
2. An umbrella should be taken because it's raining. - बारिश होने की वजह से छाता ले जाना चाहिये। - ಮಳೆ ಹೊಯ್ಯುವುದರಿಂದ ಛತ್ರಿ ತೊಗೊಳ್ಳ ಬೇಕು.

ಅಂತೆ - like / as per

1. We did what you said. - आपने जैसे बताया हमने वैसे किया। - ನೀವು ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ ನಾವು ಮಾಡಿದೆವು.
2. He talks like a wise person. - वह बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति की तरह बात करता है। - ಅವನು ಬುದ್ಧಿವಂತರಿಂತೆ ಮಾತಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಅಂಥ - जैसा

1. ನಂದವನದಂಥ ಊರು - बाग़ीचे जैसा गाँव - a town like a garden

ವಂತ - possessor of

1. Wise person - ಬುದ್ಧಿವಂತ.
2. Rich person - ಶ್ರೀಮಂತ.

ತನ - ness

1. ಒಳ್ಳೆಯತನ = goodness
2. ದೊಡ್ಡತನ = largeness
3. ಕೆಟ್ಟತನ = badness

ಆಗಿ - जैसे

Roughly means 'सा' or 'जैसे' or 'की तरह'. Converts a noun or adjective to something like an adverb.

ಅಷ್ಟು - जितना

Roughly means 'जितना' or 'as ... as'.

1. I haven't seen a house as beautiful as yours in this world. - आपके घर जितना सुंदर घर दुनिया में मैंने नहीं देखा है। - ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯಷ್ಟು ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಮನೆ ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ನೋಡಿಲ್ಲ.

ತರ - की तरह

Roughly means 'की तरह'. Examples:

1. ಹುಚ್ಚಂತರ - like a madman.
2. ದಡ್ಡಂತರ - like a fool.

ಅಂತೂ

Usually added to pronouns, 'xಅಂತೂ' roughly means 'as for x'.

1. As for me, I'm not going. - मैं तो नहीं जाऊँगा। - ನಾನಂತೂ ಹೋಗಲ್ಲ.

ಆಗಿರುವಾಗ - being a / while being

1. Being a father, you should be more responsible. - एक पिता होने के नाते, आपको और जिम्मेदार होना चाहिए। - ಒಂದು ತಂದೆಯಾಗಿರುವಾಗ, ನೀವು ಇನ್ನು ಕೂಡ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿ ಒಡನೆ ಇರು ಬೇಕು.

ಇರುವುದರ - होने का

1. Only I know the difficulties of being a rich man. - अमीर होने की परेशानी सिर्फ़ मुझे पता है। - ಶ್ರೀಮಂತರಾಗಿ ಇರುವುದರ ಕಷ್ಟ ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತು.

ಬಹುದಾದ / ಲರ್ಹ - able

1. ಮಾಡಬಹುದಾದ - doable.
2. ಎಣಿಸಬಹುದಾದ - countable.
3. ನಂಬಲರ್ಹ - reliable

ಅಂತಿಲ್ಲ (ಅಂತೆ + ಇಲ್ಲ) - not to be

1. ಅನುವಾದಿಸುವಂತಿಲ್ಲ - not to be translated.
2. copy ಮಾಡುವಂತಿಲ್ಲ - not to be copied.

ಮೊದಲು / ಮುಂಚೆ - before

Verb's present RP + ಮುಂಚೆ/ಮೊದಲು.

Example: ಮಾಡುವ ಮುಂಚೆ = ಮಾಡುವ ಮೊದಲು - करने के पहले - before doing.

ನಂತರ / ಮೇಲೆ - after

Verb's past RP + ನಂತರ/ಮೇಲೆ.

Example: ಮಾಡಿದ ನಂತರ = ಮಾಡಿದ ಮೇಲೆ - करने के बाद - after doing.

ಇನ್ನೂ - more / other

Roughly means 'और', as in 'एक और' (one more).

1. In addition to Ravi, two other people are going to the marriage. - रवि के अलावा दो और लोग शादी में जाएँगे। - ರವಿ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಎರಡು ಜನರು ಮದುವೆಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.
